The pharmaceutical
drug and natural supplement industries
in Australia are highly regulated by the
government via a body called the Therapeutic
Goods Administration.
Safety
first
Every natural supplement made in Australia
has to be individually approved by the
Therapeutic Goods Administration for safety
and claims before it’s allowed
on the market. This is very different
to some countries, such as the United States,
where the responsibility for ensuring safety
and proof is left to the manufacturer – and
where it’s quite possible that a
questionable product makes it to market
before it’s discovered to be unsafe
or bogus.
Every claim
has to be backed up by clinical research
Every therapeutic or weight loss claim
made for an ingredient in an Australian
supplement has to be backed-up by proof.
Examples of clinical studies and evidence-based
reviews supporting the intended claims,
and the safety of the ingredients, have
to be submitted for approval to the Therapeutic
Goods Administration. The studies have
to be reputable and of high quality, and
they must have been conducted at the same
or similar dosage and strength of the ingredients
as will be included in the product.
Only when each step of
the evidence, manufacturing and testing
protocol has been approved by the Therapeutic
Goods Administration is a product allowed
on the market.

Rigorous
control of the manufacturing process
The code of Good Manufacturing Practice
is a fail-safe system of quality assurance
and quality control used to control production
of both prescription pharmaceuticals and
vitamins and supplements.
- Manufacturing
undertaken only by manufacturers licensed
by the Therapeutic Goods Administration
- All equipment
and processes used in every aspect of
manufacture are validated to ensure a
consistent standard of production excellence.
- Control of the
manufacturing environment, including
special conditions of cleaning, humidity,
temperature and light protection for
the storage of plants, extracts and other
preparations.
- Standard quarantining
and testing of finished products
 |
By law, Australian
natural health supplements must be
manufactured to the same standards
as prescription pharmaceuticals.
These standards are amongst the strictest
in the world.

Every
ingredient on the label is in the
